Joe Shannon was one of the prosecutors on the Cullen Davis case, and he teaches a four week course on the murders and trial at TCU Silver Frogs. He only teaches it once a year, in the fall, and there is always a waitlist to get it. It was absolutely fabulous! He has all the stories, photos, maps, and info that never made the papers. Way better than any movie or book when you get the inside scoop. Blood Will Tell, by Gary Cartwright, is a great book.
Your dad should look into joining Silver Frogs and taking the class. The only requirement is being 50. Heck, I'm on the curriculum committee and we might could encourage him to teach a class.
I started this before dinner and finished so I can watch the most recent 48 Hours on YouTube! Your church encounter reminds me of a time many years ago when my father-in-law, a sweet, serious devout ophthalmologist was offended when an associate pastor of his huge First Baptist Church had been revealed as an adulterer, and “there he was singing hymns loudly on Sunday as if nothing had happened.”
I am, daily, immersed in true crime and Wrongful Conviction podcasts but... come nightfall, I can't do it. I'm the little girl with the makeshift alarm system in the doorway (and a dog that will alert me) to this day. 😉
We are kindred spirits. My husband travels a lot for work. We do have a high-tech alarm system complete with cameras and panic buttons and two huge dogs. But I still keep my weapons (Mace and a pocketknife, lol) on my nightstand when he's gone. And I make a nest of pillows on his side of the bed between me and the door. Whatever works when it comes to sleeping in peace.
I have a golf club under the bed, fancy security system, but will be alerted long before the window breaks and the alarm sounds. The loudest of my three dogs weighs a hefty 5 lbs, but sounds like she weighs 105. Good for her, good for me.
You had me at "red gingham bikini." Now I have to Google the Cullen Davis Murders and watch whatever I can. It's prolly no suprise that I also love true crime and also cannot watch horror movies, especially zombies.
Of course it's just another thing we have in common! There was one movie (or maybe miniseries?) that starred Heather Locklear as Priscilla. Don't remember the name...
I love your writing and this one hits close to home! I was very scared after the Cullen Davis murders too. I remember he went to my dad’s church for a while which was so strange.
Yes! You’re the friend in the article! And it was so literally close to home for you. She practically ran to your house. Such a freaky thing that we just saw him all over town and acted like all was normal. Thank you for reading!

Joe is one of my dad's good friends! (I just didn't put that in the article.) But I didn't know about this course. Very cool!

Church is one of the best places to find hypocrites. 🤣
I love murder and mayhem too!

The nest of pillows got me. We are kindred indeed!

It’s on YouTube. The hair. The mustaches. Oh My.
It was Texas in the 70s, lol...
I've been waiting for this story. Loved it, Leslie.
Thank you, Chris! I thought you'd be able to relate!
